In 1842, the French navy came to Tahuata to Vaitahi valley. They set up a naval base. The people did not understand that they had agreed to adopt French law. It ended up really bad for them. They became ill, the French were cutting down breadfruit trees to build a fort. The people saw this as madness. The people fled into the hills. The French said, "Return within 24 hours". The daugher of Iotete the chief said, "No, let us stay in the hills, but we will continue to bring you food."
The French said, "No. 24 hours!" The daughter, her name was Tahia, said, "E tahi mate otau." (We will all die the same death.) She meant, "Now there will be war." There was a war. But the people of Vaitahu lost. The French had cannons and they did not. So the people of Vaitahu fled to Hapatoni, the valley in which this video was filmed. They are not singing about the war. They are singing about the dark ocean and a bird.
Love the little girl playing the big drum.
Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas.
